Facing My Fears Unexpectedly Led To Action

a sink full of dirty dishes made me happyLast year I spent some time trying to figure out what my next venture would be.

Working on a new project that calls on my creativity feeds my soul.

The project I was considering was a new podcast called “Facing Fear”. My plan was to record a weekly podcast where I would explore one of my deepest, darkest fears.

I’m talking about the kind of fears that would have me tossing and turning for hours in the middle of the night.

Fears like:

    • There is nothing exceptional about me.
    • I'm 42. Since I haven't found anyone to love me yet, I never will, and will die alone.
    • I spend too much time worrying about my own crap and my loved ones don't know that I care about them.
    • I am just filling my life with tasks so as to avoid facing my loneliness.
    • At my core I am really a selfish person. I worry more about replacing my computer than I do about the real suffering in the world.

 

I know. It’s upbeat stuff. My heart aches a little just in typing that list.

Each morning I set aside a little time to work on the project.

My list grew and grew as I tried to find the ten “best” fears for the first set of shows. I started outlining short essays about each fear and what I believed to be the root cause.

I found myself practicing the wording about the fears for the recordings while I was in the shower or on my exercise bike.

Then something really unexpected happened…

One afternoon I went to get a glass of water and there were no glasses in my cupboard.

A Pile Of Dishes In The Sink And No Clean Bowls Or Glasses

I know that an empty cupboard isn't really such an odd thing but let's consider a few facts.

    • I live alone.
    • I have at least a dozen glasses.
    • When I am looking for an excuse to be busy and feel productive I do dishes.

 

That last point is the important one.

Whenever I am trying to avoid my worries about things that feel dangerous or overwhelming I head straight to my kitchen and clean.

In that moment I noticed that my counter and sink were cluttered with dishes. Almost every dish I owned was visible and dirty.

And the reason was because I was so busy doing more important tasks that I wasn't feeling the negative emotions about those tasks.

By thinking about this new podcast I was facing my fears head on and healing them.

I have never been so happy to see a pile of dirty dishes in my life!

It Wasn't Just Clearing Core Issues. There Was Another Key Factor

I need to be clear it wasn't just a matter of facing my fears. Three key factors created the change:

    1. I named my fears fully and honestly.
    2. I thought about the root causes of those fears in a systematic way.
    3. I was working towards a clear set of goals.

 

Wallowing in my fears would not have been helpful. That can become self-indulgent and unhealthy.

Taking the time to uproot the fears meant that I was healing and feeling better BUT real transformation only happened because I had a clearly-defined list of goals and I was able to step into action.

The Right Number Of Goals

I think there was also a secondary factor that contributed to my success in taking action: I had the right number of goals.

There have been times in my life where I have had a full page of detailed goals. Goals for my personal life, my physical health, my spiritual growth, and my business.

It’s great to have that sort of clarity, but in truth I have found it difficult to commit to working towards so many goals.

Around the time I started working on the fear project I had pared down my list of goals to just three.

I wasn't saying that my life was perfect or that I only needed to work on three goals but by focusing on just three I was able to give each one the attention required to make real progress. I had learned that spreading myself too thinly meant that I wasn't moving forward with anything.

    • Goal, Asset, and Obstacle Assessment – Before we can begin we need to know where you are right now in your life. This assessment is designed to help us gain a clear picture of the obstacles you face and your unaccessed assets to allow you to reach your goals (even if you aren’t quite sure what they are right now).

       

    • Core Issue Assessment – Most of my clients have one or two core issues holding them back in many areas of their life. This assessment will help us to zero in on those core issues to guide our work.

       

    • Assessment Prep Tap-Along Audio – Starting a process like this can feel a little scary. You might be worried that we will uncover something awful or that you will do the assessment wrong. There are no right or wrong answers in these assessments but to make it easier for you I have created a tap-along audio to help you to feel comfortable and safe as you go through the process.

       

    • Kick Start Planning Call And Long Term Plan – After you have completed the assessments and I have had the chance to study them we will create your personal plan. During this call we’ll define your focus for the program in the form of three goals. We will also find clarity on which core issues we will target head on.

       

    • 14 Weekly 45-Minute Coaching and Tapping Calls – Each week we will have a 45-minute call in which we will review the week’s progress, tap for any new issues that have arisen, tap on the core issues standing in the way of progress, and create very specific actions steps to be taken over the next week.     • Weekly SOS Tapping Call – Sometimes issues and resistance to taking action pop up. I would hate for you to feel like you have to wait for our next call to receive tapping help. The 10 Questions That Changed My Life

Good morning,

Last week I was having dinner with a friend I’ll call “Sally” at a place that serves the most amazing chicken and waffles.

As we were enjoying dinner she explained that she was having a really hard time. She was in the middle of a move. Her job was stressing her out. She was thinking of changing careers. AND she had been sick for weeks.

I was listening closely as caring friend.

She stopped. Looked me dead in the eye and said, “I know you like to leave your work at work, but right now I don't need my friend Gene. I need Gene the coach. Help!”

So I smiled, ordered another drink, and began to ask her some questions.

It Only Took 10 Questions

Over the next 45 minutes I asked her ten questions. With each answer she gave I repeated back what she had said in my own words and asked a few follow-up questions.

At the end of 45 minutes she said, “Wow! You’re so smart. Thank you for helping me out with that.”

The funny thing is, I didn't say anything smart.

I didn't offer any advice. I didn't make any suggestions. I didn't help her plan anything.

I simply asked ten questions and in the process of answering those questions she was able to see clearly what she wanted – and, more importantly, needed – the steps she needed to take, and the emotional blocks she needed to clear in order to be successful.

These Are Not Random Questions

10 Question System When Sally asked me to put my coach hat on I didn't just start asking her random questions, but instead I worked her through a specific process designed to move us from confusion, to clarity, and then to action.

The 10 Question System (I know it’s not an awfully catchy name) is very powerful and something I use in my own life as well as with my clients.

This system guides me when I’m trying to do something as small as reorganizing my office or something as large as creating a new product line.

I Want You To Learn This System

On the surface this system looks super simple and that is because it is simple.

BUT just because something is simple doesn't mean that it is easy to do at first.

To that end I have created a training program that will walk you through the full system. Not only will you know the right questions to ask and the right order in which to ask them, but you will understand the motivation behind each of the questions.

Once you master the why of each question it will stop being a formula and start to be something that you can integrate into your daily life as you make choices, as you are helpful to your friends and family, and can be integrated into client work if that is what you do.

And it is not just ten questions!

Each step along the way I teach you how you can tap for the information that comes up from each of the questions. You are not just figuring out what you want and need but also how to clear the issues that will (and always do) come up along the way.

He Called Me An Internet Huckster (AKA: Why TappingQ&A Exists)

I recently received another one of those emails when I was selling my Advanced Tapping Training.

It went like this:

“Oh I see how it is! You promise that you are going to give us all this free stuff only so you can sell us products.

I have seen this from other internet hucksters. Your bait and switch isn't going to work on me.

It has been a while since I last did this and I thought this was a good prompt to re-explain why TappingQandA.com and this newsletter exist.

So here are the 3 reasons I send these newsletters and one change coming up.

My hope is that every time I add a resource to TappingQ&A you will find it helpful. That it will help you understand your issues in a new way and that it will help you to grow your tapping skill set.

The Best Of 2014

It might be the sixth time I have re-read a particular book, but it feels like there are passages that I have never seen before.

All I Want For Christmas…

All I Want For ChristmasGood morning,

When I was a kid my mother would ask me wanted I wanted for Christmas and she’d always end the question with the addendum “and you are not allowed to ask for world peace.”

It's not that my mother didn't want world peace. She just knew that she wasn't going to be able to find it in my size in time for Christmas day.

This year I have a different request for Christmas.

My friend Laura Reach is an amazing tattoo artist. (I happen to carry hours of her work on my left arm.) In recent years she has increasingly moved away from artistic tattoo and instead she is dedicating her time to doing incredibly realistic mammographic tattoos for breast cancer survivors.

They Keep Telling Me I Am Stupid For Giving It Away Free (Are They Right?)

I am going be up front with you. This email is going to challenge you. I might even come off as a little cranky (or a lot cranky).

I'm OK with that. This is too important for me to worry about what you think about me.

“You Give Away Too Much!”
Hear this a lot from other practitioners. They tell me there is way too much free content and because there is so much free content nobody will ever hire me or buy my stuff. Why would they bother?

I personally think it is a good way to work but I decided to consider this more closely.

On the back of an envelope on a recent flight I did some calculations. Based on the average number of people who open my emails only about 0.6% ever hire me for sessions or buy anything from the site.

That is not 6%, but 0.6%.

That mean 99.4% use the resources totally free of charge.

In the end I am OK with that because my goal in creating the site isn't only as a source of income. I know that the site ends up helping those who might not able to afford to pay for tapping resources.

With that in mind…

A Question For The 99.4%
I am guessing you keep opening my emails because you find them useful in some way. Not everything and not everyone, but there is enough useful stuff that you come back for more.

What Would You Do If You Lost Your Home In A Typhoon?

Good morning,

Last November super typhoon Haiyan devastated parts of the Philippines.

  • 12 million people were impacted directly
  • 4 million people were displaced from their homes
  • 1 million homes were damaged or destroyed

In addition to the hardship of the destruction, I can't even begin to imagine the emotional toll an experience like that would have on me. Some of the children who lived through it described being crippled with fear every time the wind blows.

My friend Sebastiaan van der Schrier decided that something needed to be done for those impacted by the storm. Especially the kids!

In December he went to the Philippines where he worked with local government leaders to introduce EFT in as many schools as he could reach and he tapped with hundreds of kids to bring relief to the trauma they had suffered.

After this experience he decided he wanted to do more!

His new goal?

  • Tap with 10,000 kids (yes, 10,000)
  • Train 100 local practitioners
  • Train 3 local trainers
  • Build 200 sustainable homes
  • Build 5 storm proof classrooms

To achieve this goal Sebastiaan is doing two things.

First, he has invited 10 practitioners to join him April 21st – May 12th in the Philippines to tap with kids and run trainings. These practitioners are closing down their practices for few weeks to help out.

Second, he is reaching out to the tapping community help raise the funds to pull off this amazing ambitious goal.

Last week I received a note from Sebastiaan asking if I would be willing to support him in this endeavor.

The answer was yes, of course.

On a closer reading of his note I realized he was inviting me to be one of the 10 practitioners to join him.

I was (and still am) amazed by the invitation.

I looked at my calendar, moved a few things around and I will be joining the team for 10 days.

Why My Readers Open My Emails

A few weeks ago I sent out an email explaining why I run TappingQ&A. As part of the email I invited readers to unsubscribe from this mailing list.

It's not that I wanted people to unsubscribe. It is just that I know how valuable your time is and my aim is to be helpful, not a drain on your time. I only want to be sending emails to people who find them useful.

Two things happened.

One, I had a higher unsubscribe rate than I normally do. Many of the people who unsubscribed explained why and thanked me. It was very nice.

Two, I received a flood of emails saying just the opposite. Things like this:

Since the question has come up I thought it would be a good time to share why I send these emails and why TappingQ&A exists.

Why Do I Send These Emails?
There is one and only one reason I send an email. It is because I think the content of the email will be useful to you in some way.

This could be for a variety of reasons. It might be instructional, encouraging, challenging, or even fun.

It might be something free or it might be something for sale.

I don't hit send unless I truly think it will be of benefit to you.

The nice thing is that you are in control. If you don't want to hear from me any more you can hit unsubscribe at the top or bottom of this note.

There will be no hard feelings. Promise!

To Learn
One of the reasons I love creating the content for this site is because each time I create something new it adds to my own knowledge and development.

I generally have a good idea of what I think when I sit down to write, but when I am forced to bring those ideas out of my head into full detail I learn so much.

By spending time interviewing others and crystallizing my own ideas I have grown, learned, and am a much better practitioner because of the process of creating these resources.

I hope you get half as much out of this as I do.

To Make A Living
I know it might be hard to believe, but this is how I make my living. I don't have an employer. I don't have someone providing benefits. If I don't bring it in, it doesn't come in.

You Have Been My Greatest Catalyst To Learning AND I Want To Give Back

Good morning!

Over 6 years ago when I created Tapping Q & A I thought it would be a good idea to build a website around the idea of answering questions. Little did I know how good an idea that would turn out to be.

At least, it was the best choice for me and my learning.

Every time I sit down to write about a topic in response to a question from one of my readers I learn something.

This is has made me a better tapper. I am better at tapping for my own issues and I am better working with my clients.

Thank you for reading, commenting, and asking questions. My life is better because of it.

AND The Questions Keep Getting Better
One of the neat things (my editor doesn't like it when I use the word neat, but that is how it feels) I have noticed over time is that the questions you asking are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Six years ago more than half the questions I received were some variation on, "What are the right tapping phrases for [insert issue]?" as if there were some magic words to clear a certain issue.

Today the questions are about clearing resistance, the best way to identify and deal with core issues, and the best order in which to deal with issues for optimum results.

It has been a great joy watching the tapping community grow up!

I am sure you are part of this evolution and are looking to be a better tapper, or you wouldn't be reading this.

Getting Even Better At Tapping
Along with the development of the tapping community there has also been a maturing of the training resources available. There are at least 3 international organizations offering certification and it seems that every practitioner under the sun has created some "new" version of tapping they are teaching.

It is really hard to know which way to turn to expand your tapping tool set.

If you are looking to learn new tapping skills I have something for you to consider.

A Great Big Fat Marketing Mistake
I have put together what I believe are the best of the best tapping tools in what I think is the easiest way to learn them. This is probably a mistake, but I haven't come up with a fancy name.

Lesson 2 — 18 Lessons From 10 Masters Of Healing
There is much to be learned from the great teachers and masters in many different healing fields. We can learn from their teachings, how they learned themselves, and how they work with clients. In this section we will look at 18 different lessons from giants in the healing fields that have transformed the way I work. If you master even a handful of these lessons, it will transform your work.

Lesson 3 — Hypnotic Patter And Language
The lessons I have learned from hypnosis have affected not only the way I talk to and communicate with my clients, but every interaction that I have during the day. There are two main skills we can learn from hypnosis: building rapport and navigation/guidance.

RAPPORT: If we are NOT able to build rapport and gain the trust of our clients then it will be very difficult for us to work together. In this lesson we will explore the way a hypnotist uses language before, while inducing, and during a trance. We don't have to hypnotize our clients to use these tools to help us to create a relationship of trust as well as more easily guiding our clients to finding their root issues. Because of the nature of hypnosis this rapport is essential and, knowing this, a good hypnotist is working on building rapport even before they speak with the client the first time. There is much tappers can learn from this approach.

NAVIGATION/GUIDANCE: In fact all hypnosis is nothing more than self-hypnosis. A hypnotist is nothing more than a navigator. They are providing instruction and guidance as the client works their way to root causes and transformation. We can learn a lot from this strategy when helping our tapping clients. Not only will this help us to get out of our clients' way, but also we can learn how better to help clients transform.

Lesson 4 — Guided Imagery
Most of the emotional work we do with clients is done in the subconscious mind. (Note: A comprehensive video lesson on the unconscious, subconscious, and conscious minds is part of the pre-class work.) We can't directly access the subconscious mind to change it (and this is a good thing) so using guided imagery is a gentle and powerful way to create transformation at the subconscious level. In this lesson you will learn the seven steps I use in guided imagery that allow the client's subconscious to lead us to the root of the issue, plus the concept of "fairytale physics" which will unlock your client's creativity.

Lesson 5 — Parts Work
There is no tool that I use more than parts work. Over 90% of the sessions I do use some form of parts work. When we help a client approach their issues through the lens of a part we are able to help them to focus in on a small part of something that is much too big to deal with at once AND we are able to discover the solutions to the problem that the system already has. This is the most powerful tool I have in my tool kit. In this lesson you will learn the many different types of parts work (including parts mediation), how to gently guide the client to find their way to root causes, and how to empower clients to use these tools and resources after the session so that their healing can continue.

Lesson 6 — Age Regression
Age regression is a very specific type of parts work, so I devote a complete lesson to it. In age regression we are working with the younger version of the client. (Anytime we are thinking of a past memory it is a version of age regression.) In this lesson we will not only look at what age regression is, but we will look at how we can easily bridge back into the past to find the root of an issue, determine if we have worked back to the earliest memory, and how to heal/transform once we are in contact with these earlier parts.

Lesson 7 — Time Lines, Forgiveness Work, And Score Boards Oh My!
In this lesson I cover three of my favorite tools in my tapping arsenal. I never plan to use these tools, but there are times when working with clients that it will become obvious that one of these three tools will help a client much quicker than just tapping on the thought or emotion they are feeling. These tools are simple to use, each with an uncomplicated step-by-step formula.

Lesson 8 — Meta Models
It is amazing how inaccurate our language is when we are describing what is going on in our lives. "Everyone at works hates me!" "I am never going to get ahead!" "I just can't do it!" There might be a kernel of truth in these statements, but they are not true. The problem comes when we approach the world as if they are true. Meta Models is a set of tools that helps us to recognize the logical fallacies in our thoughts and words that are affecting our actions and choices. In this part we will explore the 10 most common meta models, ways of helping our clients to see the flaws, and strategies to help clients transform these beliefs. In the practical part of this lesson participants will get the chance to work through real client case histories to practice identifying and reframing these meta models.

Roger Callahan Remembered

Recently I was sitting on a flight that was about to take off and there was a small child crying a few rows behind me. I decided to try a little surrogate tapping for the poor little guy who was having a bad morning.

The person sitting next to me said, “Oh, you do that tapping thing too?”

When something like this happens I always ask lots of questions because I’m curious to how people find their way to tapping. In most cases it is a family member, friend, or health care provider who has introduced it to them.

Because tapping has now been around for a while many people know how to use it, but don't know much of its history.

Most people don't know that modern form of tapping as we know it came about because of the pioneering work of Roger Callahan, PhD.

Roger passed away on November 4th at the age of 88. Here is a beautiful tribute written by his family.

I was particularly touched by Gary Craig's reflection on Facebook:

I never met Roger, but was lucky enough to do an interview with his wife Joanne about Thought Field Therapy, which is the grandfather of the tapping most of us use.

I hope all of us are willing to be as bold as Roger was in sharing healing tools with the world.

The Main Reason EFT Doesn’t Work (And What You Can Do About It)

Good Morning!

I don't know about you, but I love rollercoasters.

One of my favorite sounds in the world is the clicking sound of the car right as you are about to reach the top of a big hill on the track. Then there is a split second of silence that feels like an eternity. The next thing you are hurtling towards the earth at what feels like a million miles an hour.

As you read that last paragraph you were either thrilled or scared to death.

Fear (and our relationship with fear) is a funny thing.

I know I have a love/hate relationship with it. On a roller coaster I crave that feeling of fear in the silence at the top of the hill. While in my daily life there are few emotions that feel worse than fear.

When fear is experienced because of something we are encountering in our daily life it is crippling. Be it something like speaking in front of an audience or finding some unexpected creepy crawly thing under the bed, it shuts us down.

This week I was asked a question by someone who spent 20 minutes tapping for fear. After 20 minutes she had made no progress at all and was still just as fearful as when she started tapping.

I think the answer to why she didn't make progress can be found in that love/hate relationship. On one level we need fear to keep us aware of dangerous situation and on another level it can cripple us.

This week I have for you a straightforward but powerful way to tap before you tackle fear (or any issue for that matter) to make sure your tapping is successful.

When I sit down to write these newsletters I do it in a vacuum.

Most of the time I am sitting at the big table in the back of Black Brick coffee in Brooklyn. My starting point is always the hope that I will produce something helpful.

But I really don't know what will happen.

Will you like it? Will it be useful? Or did I miss the mark?

It's always fun when something I write really hits home for you.

Based on the comments and personal emails I received I am guessing I struck a chord with last week’s article on tapping for action, tapping for relief, and being stuck in the tolerable middle. (If you missed it you can find it here: https://tappingqanda.com/?p=9270.)

After recognizing that we need to do more than tap just to feel better the next step is to have a plan that will move us toward action.

The mistake that is most often made when tapping is we deal with root cause.

YES, you read that right. It is a mistake to deal only with the root cause of the issue. Often there is one more step that needs to be taken for transformation to take place.

Sometimes Tapping Is No More Helpful Than Eating Ice Cream

Good afternoon!

The other night wasn't my proudest moment.

I have been a little out of sorts and wasn't feeling my best.

I had ridden my skateboard (yes, I ride a skateboard) down to the 5th Street pier on the East River to do my evening prayers while looking over at Manhattan. Normally this is a great way to end the day. I am outside enjoying the fresh air blowing off the river, the beautiful view, and time to spend in thought and prayer.

Maybe it was because I have been working so much this week. Maybe it was because I hadn't made time to work out because I had so much work to do. Or maybe it was just one of those blah days.

I don't know why I was that way, but I did know what I needed to do.

I decided I needed ice cream.

So I walked to the grocery store and stared at the ice cream. For ten solid minutes I stared at ice cream. Part of me absolutely knew it was a bad choice and part of me just wanted ice cream. I can't imagine what I looked like just staring into the freezer?!

Bought the ice cream. (Dulce de leche if you must know.)

Walked home.

Ate two bowls.

Felt better.

And woke up at 3am feeling bad.

I know why I did it…I just wanted to feel better in the moment and my system knew on some level that a cheap ice cream fix would do the trick (in the short term).

I should have tapped, but I didn't.

The interesting thing is even though tapping right then would have been a better choice (and not eating crap food and getting a better night's sleep) I'm not sure it would have resulted in a long term change.

This week I want to share with you something I have been thinking a lot about lately.

The idea is this: There are times when I tap that it makes me feel better in the moment, but it doesn't result into any long term change. It is good that I feel better in the moment, but it is also easy to fall right back into the bad habit or bad feeling I was tapping for.

In the short term the tapping is much better than eating ice-cream. In the long term it really doesn't make much of a difference (much like eating ice-cream doesn't make a long term difference) because I am still falling back into my old ways.

What To Do When It Feels Like EFT Has Lost Its Power

Good Morning!

Most tappers go through the same process. They are introduced to tapping, they love tapping, tapping is really helpful…and then they hit a wall.

It feels like tapping isn't as effective as it once was. After a tapping session they might feel a little better, but major changes don't seem to be showing up like they once did.

I think that there is a very logical reason for this.

When we first start tapping most of the issues we work on are the easy ones. Because they are on the surface we have direct access to them AND we can see the immediate impact of clearing them out.

As time passes we find our way to issues with much deeper roots and our work isn't as quick and it isn't as easy.

Today I have two tools for you to use when you come up against this type of wall.

First, I have an approach for those issues where you can't seem to find a root cause.

(Sidenote: Did you know that looking for a root cause can actually slow the healing process in some cases? I know, crazy!)

Second, often times it is hard to clear an issue when it is part of our identity. We start making statements like “The men in my family have always…” or “You know how Italians are…”

When we have been handed down beliefs from our family, heritage, and upbringing it can be difficult to let them go.
