TapAlong #14A: Taking Risks

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” – Pablo Picasso

Trying new things can be hard. It requires us to put ourselves at risk. It requires up to face the fact that we don’t know everything. We know intellectually that there are many things we have tried in the past that we didn’t know how to do. Some of them worked out right away while others took time for us to learn. When we recognize that it is okay for us to try new things and that it is okay to not be perfect during the learning process it makes it easier for us to try new and different things.

Understanding What Is Motivating The Change We Want

There are many reasons we want to make changes in our life. Often, the greater the perceived reward the greater the motivation we have. Many times there’s more than one reason for making a change. Understanding these reasons can be key to our transformation.

TapAlong #6A: The crap I know is better than the crap I don’t know

Sometimes it is hard to move forward because we are worried about what might go wrong. The situation we are in right now isn’t perfect, but we know everything that isn’t perfect and we know how to manage it. There might be people who push our buttons, but we know how to deal with them. There might be tasks that we hate doing, but we brace ourselves for those tasks and we just push ourselves through. Even though this isn’t perfect, we know how to deal with it. In this predictable, familiar world, the future is known. However, making changes brings the unknown. We might get what we want, but we also might bring problems we are not ready for and problems we can’t handle. When considering making changes (even positive ones) part of us is willing to remain stuck with the problems that we can manage instead of trying to do something new for fear of something bad happening to us.

TapAlong #2: Not Needing Others’ Permission To Change

(Free TapAlong Audio) We are connected to many people in our lives. Some of the connections are very close while others are not so close. When we make choices we don’t make them in a vacuum. We know our choices impact other people. Sometimes our choices are going to directly affect others with the outcome while other times it simply effects the way they see us. Because we consider how others are going to think about us because of our choices, there are time we hesitate because we are not sure how others are going to react (or we fear the reaction is going to be negative). On a subconscious level we won’t act unless we feel we have the permission of those around us to go after our dream. It feels a little odd to ask someone permission to chase our dreams, but it is important to note the places where we are holding ourselves back.

Good Questions Help Illuminate the “Big Picture” of a Core Issue

We are taught when tapping it very import to be as specific as possible. The more specific we are the faster Emotional Freedom Techniques(EFT)/tapping works. Sometimes it is better to take a more global approach to an issue. Instead of moving from the general to the specific we can use the specific to find our way to a much deeper issue. When doing this we see the specific as being a symptom to a much larger issue that we weren’t aware of. In this article Vermont based practitioner Jade Barbee shares an experience were he was able to take a very specific issue to find a much deeper issue to do work on.

Layers of Resistance

I know that I need to spend time tapping on my issues, but I can’t seem to get myself to do it. After the fact (of not tapping) I feel a lot worse because I haven’t done the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)/tapping that I know works. Is there any way I can get over my block about sitting down to tap?

Pod #60: Self Acceptance w/ Steve Wells

One of the biggest road blocks for beginning tappers is using the set up phrase “Even though…I love and accept myself.” Sometimes we don’t believe it. Sometimes it is painful to think of how we don’t love and accept ourselves. Because of this we won’t spend time tapping.

In this interview I chat with Steve Well about the idea of self acceptance. During this conversation I quickly came to realize that Steve and I see acceptance and resistance in the same way. We talk about Steve’s own (continuing) journey to self acceptance, how with a simple 30 day process he made major steps forward, and how moving to self acceptance heals many other issues in our lives.

Reasons That Stop Us From Trying

Often we are ourselves the biggest obstacle to our success. We hold beliefs that prevent us from trying, that prevent us from recognizing the opportunities we have to move forward. “Brian” was in a situation where he wanted to move forward with his business. He came up with a number of brilliant ideas to move his business ahead, but when push came to shove he wouldn’t take the steps he needed to take to move forward.

Dealing With Procrastination When You Can’t Name The Drawback For Doing It?

I have read a lot of articles on tapping/EFT and procrastination. Almost every article talks about the first thing you should do is to name what could go wrong or what is the penalty for taking the action. I can see that if you cleared the emotional charge around these pitfalls how it could help you to move forward. The problem I have is I have no idea why I don’t want to do these tasks. I know they are important. I know they are needed. I know they will improve my life. I can’t figure out why, even on a subconscious level, why I think these are bad steps for me to take. How else can I use tapping to get through this procrastination?
